Legacy System Modernization with Strategic Partners

Migration from Delphi, VB6, COBOL, and PowerBuilder to modern architectures, together with specialized strategic partners.

The legacy migration itself is carried out by our specialized partner. Our role: new modules, integrations, frontend and QA — and a single point of contact for your company.

When do you need it?

These are the signs that it's time to act before the system becomes a bigger problem.

  • Your system runs on Delphi, VB6, COBOL, or PowerBuilder and you can no longer find anyone who can maintain it
  • The original developer no longer works with you and the code has no documentation
  • You can't integrate the system with modern APIs, mobile apps, or BI tools
  • Every update takes weeks because the code is fragile and nobody fully understands it
  • Your IT audit flagged operational risk from relying on unsupported technologies

How we do it: specialized partners + Nextsoft

Your system holds critical business logic that has run for years. That's why modernization is delivered through shared execution: a specialized strategic partner handles the migration and Nextsoft handles the rest of the project.

Specialized strategic partner

  • Carries out the migration of the legacy system to the new platform
  • Brings specialist expertise in the source technology (Delphi, VB6, COBOL, PowerBuilder and similar)

Nextsoft

  • Develops the new modules your operation needs
  • Builds the integrations with your other systems
  • Develops the frontend
  • Runs QA on every delivery
  • Acts as your single point of contact throughout the project

The exact split of tasks is defined during the assessment, based on your project's scope.

Phased process

A structured process for critical systems, with risks and each team's role defined upfront.

Assessment

Nextsoft + specialized partner

We review the current system with you, document the critical business logic, and define which part of the work each team takes on.

Plan and architecture

Nextsoft + specialized partner

The partner defines the migration strategy for the legacy system; Nextsoft designs the new modules, integrations, and frontend on the target architecture.

Shared execution

Partner: migration · Nextsoft: modules, integrations and frontend

The partner migrates the legacy system in phases, in parallel with the current system. Nextsoft builds the new pieces and coordinates progress with you.

QA and stabilization

Nextsoft (QA) + specialized partner

Nextsoft runs quality testing on the deliveries. Go-live and post-launch support are agreed according to the project scope.

Concrete benefits

What your company gains after completing the migration.

Reduces operational risk

Your operation stops depending on technology with no support, no vendors, and no active community.

Modern, maintainable code

Any developer can understand, modify, and extend the system. No dependency on a single person.

Integration with your current ecosystem

Connections to external APIs, mobile apps, BI tools, and cloud platforms, built by Nextsoft.

A transition planned to keep your operation running

The migration is planned in phases so the current system keeps running while the new one is built. The switch is scheduled once your team approves it.

Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about legacy system migration.

Who carries out the migration?

The legacy migration itself is carried out by our specialized strategic partner; Nextsoft does not perform it on its own. Nextsoft executes the rest of the project: new modules, integrations with other systems, frontend, and QA. Your company has a single point of contact: Nextsoft coordinates the work of both teams.

What happens to the business logic that has been in the system for 20 years?

It's the first thing that gets protected. Before anything new is built, the specialized partner and Nextsoft document and validate the critical business rules with you.

How long does a legacy migration take?

It depends on the size of the system, the scope, and the strategy defined by the specialized partner. As a rough reference, a small migration may take 3 to 4 months and a complex multi-module system 8 to 18 months, but these are estimates, not guaranteed timelines: the schedule is agreed after the assessment. The part Nextsoft executes runs in 2-week sprints so you can review and validate each delivery.

Is there a risk that the current system fails during migration?

The risk is reduced by working in parallel: the current system keeps running while the new one is built, and the switch happens once the new system has been tested and approved by your team. Nextsoft takes part in that testing through QA.

Which legacy technologies can be migrated?

Together with our specialized partners we cover Delphi, VB6, COBOL, PowerBuilder, Oracle Forms, WinForms, .NET Framework 2.0-4.8, and similar systems. If you're unsure about your specific technology, tell us and we'll evaluate it.
